Christmas Junior Bake Off

The Great Roath Junior Xmas Bake Off

On Saturday 15th of November as part of The Wellfield Road Winter Festival we rain a Junior Bake Off at St Andrews Church Hall. As always the standard was exceptional and there were over 20 entries. We are always amazed at the quality and creativity that goes into the cakes at The Junior Bake Off.

The Bake Offs Elaine & Sandra started taking entries from 11am and they kept arriving up until judging started at 2:30pm. Our judges had a hard task ahead to find a worthy winner because all entries were of a high standard.

The rest of Team Bake Off were busy selling cakes on our charity Cake Sale Stall which done really well and a massive thanks must go to all the kind people that baked cakes for us to sell.

By 4:30 we had our winners and prizes were given and our only regret was we couldn't give a prize to every entry. Part of the winning prize was to invite the winner to help turn on the Christmas lights on Wellfield Rd.

Thousands of people had turned up to watch the Christmas Lights get turned on and our winners took to the stage accompanied by the Lord Mayor for the BIG switch on.

We must give a massive thanks to St Andrews Church especially Jill and Des for their kindness and help with The Bake Off. Our wonderful sponsors CPS Homes for continuing to support us. Ocean Hairdressers, Juno Lounge & The Royal George Pub for supplying prizes and support. A huge thank you to The Wellfield Rd Traders for putting on a great day, your hard work certainly paid off. A big thank you to the greatest team of volunteers EVER Team Bake Off Rocks!!!! Our fabulous Judges too!
And last but not least....
The amazingly talented junior bakers that took part! Well done!

The recipe for this years winning cake by Nell Pugh

We have been inundated with requests for the recipe for this years winning cake made by Nell Pugh. Thanks Nell for sharing it with us!

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER MOUSSE CAKE

This make a massive cake – you could make half or two thirds for a more manageable size! The cake can be made in advance and freezes really well. The mousse is best made in advance and frozen as it makes the cake far sturdier for crumb coating the cake and getting a smooth surface.

INGREDIENTS

Equipment:

3 8-inch metal cake tins

Spray oil

Greaseproof paper

2 8-inch silicon cake tins

For the cake:

2 ¼ cups white plain flour

1 ¼ cups white castor sugar

½ cup cocoa powder

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

1 ½ teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

¾ teaspoon salt

½ cup sunflower oil

3 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla paste

¾ cup buttermilk

¾ cup strong coffee, cooled

For the mousse:

225g full fat cream cheese

¾ cup icing sugar

1 cup smooth peanut butter – use best quality not cheap – I use Whole Earth

1 teaspoon vanilla paste

Pinch of salt

1 cup double cream

For the buttercream:

1.5 cups salted butter – I really like Tesco Value!

½ teaspoon vanilla paste or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup cocoa powder

2 cups icing sugar

4 tablespoons double cream

For the ganache:

100g good quality dark chocolate

½ cup double cream

2 tablespoons golden castor sugar

For the decoration:

6 Reeces peanut butter cups

Salted caramel sauce – I use Tesco’s finest from a jar (life’s too short!)

Salted peanuts

METHOD

For the mousse:

Whip cream until stiff but not dry peaks. Beat all of the other ingredients together until light and creamy – about 5 mins in an electric mixer if you have one. Fold cream into peanut butter mixture. Split mix into two and pour into silicon cake tins, smoothing the top as flat as you can. Freeze until very firm (overnight is best).

For the cake:

Cut circles of greaseproof paper for the bottoms of the tins and spray oil all over. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Mix together dry ingredients in large bowl. Whisk wet ingredients in separate bowl until combined.Add the wet mix into the dry and stir until just combined and not lumpy – I think this is best done by hand and not in an electric mixerSplit into three and add to the tins. Bake at 180 until done – about 30 mins – a cocktail stick in the centre should come out cleanCool completely.

For the buttercream:

Beat butter and vanilla until light and fluffy then add the cream. Sift together cocoa powder and icing sugar and add slowly.

Stack the cake

Sandwich the cake with the frozen mousse and crumb coat with buttercream. Put in the fridge until set then ice again with buttercream until smooth all the way round.

For the ganache:

Heat cream and sugar in saucepan until almost (but not) boiling. Chop chocolate into small pieces. Pour cream over chocolate and stir until melted. Let the ganache cool slightly so it doesn’t melt your lovely smooth buttercream. Pour over the cake until the top is totally coated and the ganache runs down the sides of the cake in a (hopefully!) artful manner.

For the toppings:

Whack the Reeces cups with a rolling pin then chop them a bit into chunks Chop peanuts finely. Artfully arrange the toppings on the cake (chuck it all on!). Warm the sauce and drizzle over the top – use enough to hold all of the toppings in place.

Q&A with Nathan Wyburn. Great Roath Bake Off Judge & Artist

Nathan Wyburn shot to fame after appearing on ITV1 Britains Got Talent. He captured the attention of the judges by creating a portrait of judge Michael McIntyre made of toast & marmite.... Yes Nathan is 'That Guy'

Since then Nathan has gone on to create portraits of the worlds most famous faces in his own unique style. He has appeared on the Perez Hilton website and made numerous television appearances all over the world. Nathan who has recently signed his first book deal is a new addition to the Great Roath Bake Off judging panel. Here he takes time out to answer some questions about his carreer & upcoming role as Bake Off Judge.

Bake Off:How excited are you about judging this years bake off?

Nathan: I'm really thrilled to have been asked, food art is my and some of the creativity of the cakes Ive seen from last year is exceptional!

Bake Off: Are you a sweet or savoury kinda guy?

Nathan: I'm both, I love a great loaf of bread though!

Bake Off: Who are you most looking forward to judging with?

Nathan: Owain is my buddy so that should be a hoot as he has experience with judging last years! Lauren harries should be great fun  as she's told me she's a fan of my marmite art, maybe I'll do her a portrait? And Chris needs I'm looking forward to meeting also!

Bake Off:How much fun was the launch party?

Nathan: It was great fun! Cowboys galore! The entertainment was fantastic and that's just a taster (see what I did there) of what the bake off has in store!

Rachel: I read you were creating something special for the bake off, can you tell us what your gonna do?

Nathan:I'm not 100% certain myself yet - possibly a GBBO presenter using various baking ingredients... I'll keep you all guessing on that one.

Mari: Hi Nathan what's your favourite cake? What do you like baking?

Nathan: I like baking scones, I love a good scone! My favourite kind of cakes are Lemon flavoured!

Phil:Where's your favourite shop to buy cake?

Nathan: i actually quite like big trays of cheap birthday cake too haha! You know the huge trays you can get from supermarkets? Those! But if I had to choose I'd say M&S!

JudithHi Nathan do you keep in touch with anyone from BGT luv Judith

Nathan: YES! I often chat with Jai McDowall, the winner from my year 2011! His recent YouTube covers are brill & we may be working on a video together soon! Others from my year would be Ronan Park, Jessica Steel (who's on The Voice this year) & Jean Martyn! I've made a few good friends from other series & the X factor over the years too! It's great to share experiences and help each other out here & there!

@sianmurphy_:  If you had to eat the same meal everyday for the rest of your life, what would that be? 🙈 #AskNathan

Nathan: Oh gosh..I do like a Chip Butty... That's really bad isn't it? Yeah, a Chip Butty!

@foodmixer fresh or dried yeast?

Nathan: I always prefer to buy fresh but they both have their advantages!

Miss Sutton
Who's portrait would you most like to do?

Nathan: I'd love the Queens opinion on my portrait of her! And in the future I'd like to create portraits of some of my idols within art such as Andy Warhol, Vik Muniz & Chuck Close.

Jade: do you remember me dancing on the tables last Friday night draped in an American flag?

Nathan:
Hahahaha I do yes.. Owain was too! I blame him.

Stephen Davies:
Will you be a mean judge? How will you tell people their cakes are awful

Nathan: Not mean no, I'll be as constructive as I can be when it comes to taste. I'm ultimately looking for great creativity, uniqueness & flare!

Nia:
Will you have your photo with me & can you make me a winner

Nathan
Of course we can have a photo! But sadly only you can make that happen, by being the best!!

Nathan
What football team do you support?

Nathan: i don't watch football, sorry.

BBC presenter Owain Wyn Evans Q&A The Great Roath Bake Off

Everyone's favourite weatherman Owain Wyn Evans returns as judge at The Great Roath Bake Off for a second year. Owain was a huge hit with the Roath Bakers last year and we are delighted to have Owain back in the judging seat again.

Bake Off: How much fun was last years Bake Off?

Owain: Ha! It was an absolute hoot, and amazing to see so many cakes, way more than I expected. It’s difficult to not get excited and scoff loads of cake in the first hour or so, there were almost a hundred cakes… so by the end I was feeling stuffed. I’ll be more cautious this year and take smaller slices…but it’s hard, I have zero discipline and they were bloody gorgeous! The other judges were great fun too, and Wayne the organiser is a scream so you know… we just kept laughing and shoving cake into our mouths all day essentially. When I was asked back this year, it was an instant yes.

Bake Off: Do you have a favourite type of cake?
Owain: Darling, I love a good Victoria sponge. Who doesn’t? Even towards the end of last year’s competition my eyes lit up every time they brought us a viccy sponge, I’ll have to calm down a bit this year I think. I was proper stuffed.

Bake Off: Of all the other judges, who is the most critical judge?

Owain:Last year I’d say it was the food critics. Niki Vivian, Sarah Williams and Mariclare Carey-Jones- oh my god, they know their stuff cake wise. I’m no baker, but I *do* know a good cake when I see or eat one, I’m a real cake connoisseur. This year I imagine Beca is going to be quite critical as she’s been through possibly the most harsh and well-known cake judging process whilst on The Great British Bake off. Maybe I’ll try to be a bit more critical this year, perhaps I can elevate the drama by spitting out a cake I don’t like… we’ll see.

Bake Off:Which judge are you most looking forward to meeting?

Owain: Probably Beca, as I’ll be trying to absorb some of her cake knowledge and expand my gravitas as a judge. Although I’m sure Lauren Harries will be good fun too, and at the end of the day it’s all about having fun and raising money. Nathan Wyburn and I are friends so it’s always fun working with people you get on well with too.

Bake Off: How important are events such as the bake off in communities like Roath?

Owain: Yeah they’re really important. I love Roath, I’ve lived in several parts of Cardiff and I can honestly say this is my absolute favourite. Wellfield Road has a real community feel, I spend a lot of time here. But it’s important to get people from the surrounding areas involved too, there should be more high profile events like these in cities like Cardiff, as they’re losing that local feel and everyone is becoming anonymous. Roath’s quite big- and last year we attracted people from quite a distance, and I made loads of new friends through the GRBO.

Bake Off:- Paul Hollywood or Mary Berry?

Owain: I love Mary Berry

Bake Off:Victoria Sponge or Apple Tart?

Owain: Have you been listening?! I just said Victoria sponge. But I do love a good tart!!! Do you?

Bake Off: Sweet or savoury?

Owain: I’m more of a savoury person really. I’d much prefer to fill my belly with crackers and cheese after a meal than things like ice cream. But cake is another thing, there’s always time for cake, any time of day. I got icing sugar on one of my suits in work just before a forecast. It was a bit of a panic to get it off before going on air…but c’est la vie.

Ask Owain a question..

Zainah asks...
Does the weather affect his mood for baking. For example simple things when it's warm and serious baking when it's cold?

Owain: Hi zainah. In not a very serious baker but if it's a hot day prefer to eat something summery! I like fruity tarts.

Julie: Where is your favourite place to eat/buy cake?

OwainHi Julie! Ideally somewhere where I can sit down. It's no fun eating cake on the run. Tea&Cake is fab.

Beth: Hi Owain, do any of your colleagues at the BBC bake? Are they good bakers?

Owain:Hi Beth! Behnaz who presents the weather with me cooks some fabulous Iranian food including cakes!

Calum: Hi Owain if you were a cake what would you be and why?

Owain: Hiya Calum, if I was a cake I would be a scone as they're available plain or with extras such as fruit. Variety!

Heather: Hi Owain were there any cakes last year that were awful tasting?

Owain: Hi Heather. There were a few which weren't really my cup of tea! Things which included coconut, mainly! But the standard was really high and there was nothing vomit inducing, fortunately!

Greg: how did you get involved in The Bake Off is baking a passion of yours?

Owain: Hello Greg. I was contacted by Wayne the organiser. I think he saw me on the weather and thought "he looks like someone who likes a bit of cake". I was very excited about taking part, and can't wait for this years Bake Off either! Baking isn't really a passion of mine... I just prefer the end product as opposed to the cooking process.

Sheila: You look good on the telly!

Owain: Oh thanks Sheila! Xxx I hope I can still fit into my suits after eating yet more cake this year.

Andrea: would you like to host The Great British Bake Off?

Owain: I do host events occasionally Andrea. But I'm so happy as a judge on the bake off I think I'd prefer to stay doing that. There is also less pressure on you as a judge surprisingly. Hosting is hard work, you're always reading the crowd and the atmosphere.

David: Hi Owain will it be sunny for the bake off?

Owain: Ha David if I had a pound every time someone asked me for a long range forecast I'd be living in Penylan and not Roath! I joke. We had fab weather last year so let's cross our fingers- keep an eye on that forecast!

Rhian Marshall: hi Owain, who is your favourite volunteer at the Bake Off

Owain: What question Rhian! I love the volunteers all equally. Especially the ones who live on a Wellfield Road. They're so glamorous. X

Cher: Hi Owain do you believe in life after love?

Owain: Oh hi Cher. Yes I do. But Following a feeling I had inside I'm not actually sure if I have the strength.

Linda: there's lots going on at this years bake off what are you most looking forward to?

Owain: Hi Linda! It's definitely the Victoria sponges which are likely to be plentiful! they're my fave.

Barry: who are your favourite celebrity chefs

Owain: Hi Barry. I used to love Keith Floyd as a child- my parents used to watch that show. And he reminded me of my grandfather. He was a fab cook, and enjoyed a glass or two of vino rouge like Floyd!

Ian Layzell: where do you buy your yeast Owain?

Owain
What a question Ian... I've never purchased yeast, can you recommend?!

Scott Williams: how do you feel that Roath Favourites The Chicago Boys are not on the bill at this years bake off?

Owain:Scott I'm devastated the Chicago boys aren't there! But Calum Ross et all will be, so the quality of entertainment will still be high!

KevinQ1. I think their is enough proof global warming is occuring and this in turn is affecting the gulf steam which has such a strong influance on our weather...because of this what does Owain think the weather in the UK will look like in 10 years time? :-)

OwainThe jet stream does play a huge role in our weather Kelvin. It's what brings most of our weather systems across the Atlantic towards us. There is constant research happening regarding global warming and climate change- but it's very difficult to predict how our weather here in the UK will be in a decades time.

Timmy: how do you eat your cream egg?

Owain:I don't eat chocolate Timmy so Creme eggs are off the menu at present.

Gwenno: which do you prefer, too shelf baking or bottom shelf baking?

Owain: Hi Gwenno. I don't really bake and don't know the difference between top and bottom shelf baking- tell me?

Rachelle: if you were to make a cake to resemble someone famous who would you do?

Owain: Oh gosh. Maybe I would make one of myself, why not?

Christine: hi Owain what do you like most about roath? Do you live in roath?

Owain: I love Roath Christine, yes I've lived here for a few years. Wellfield Road, City Road and The Park are my fave parts. I also love being able to walk into town.

The Great Roath Bake Off 2014

The Great Roath Bake Off 2014

The annual cake baking event is back for a fourth year and it promises to be bigger & better than previous years!
Preparations for the big day started way back in October to ensure this is The Greatest Roath Bake Off yet!
After the phenomenal success of last years Bake Off we had to raise the bar to make this event even more successful.
Team Bake Off have been busy recruiting entertainers, selecting judges and thinking up new ideas to make the Great Roath Bake Off a fun day out for everyone.

We decided after the enormous effort in the under 16's category last year to introduce The Great Roath Junior Bake Off. The standard of cakes & bakes by the under 16's last year was outstanding so we felt a bigger emphasis should be made of this category. We are hoping for another great turn out from the young Bakers in Roath.

We were also impressed with the amount of entries in the professional category last year. This is for professional cake makers/restaurants/bakers to enter what they would normally sell. This category seen entries not just from Roath but from all over Wales which highlighted just how popular this event had become.

In the general cake category we had just over one hundred entries last year! We assumed we would have had fifty entries at most but as the afternoon went on cake after cake was presented to us for judging. With a team of over ten judges it took nearly four hours to taste every cake and decide a winner. Each judge expressed how high the standard was in this category and praised the originality and presentation of each cake.

The Bake/Bread/Pie category will return also. This category seen some seriously amazing entries last year. Bill Wards pork pie was a favourite all day amongst judges and seemed right he won this category but the standard of bread and other pies was exceptionally high.

Apart from the baking we have an amazing line up of entertainment throughout the day.

We are honoured to have Beca Lyne Pirkis of Great British Bake Off fame join the judging panel. Beca will also answer some questions to the audience about her time on the hugely popular tv show and give baking tips to aspiring bakers.
We are so pleased to have Beca join us, ever since she appeared on the show people have been suggesting we approach her for an appearance at The Roath Bake Off and we were delighted she accepted our invitation and appreciate her taking time out of her busy schedule to be with us.

Britains Got Talent Finalist Nathan Wyburn will be creating something special for us on the day. Viewers will remember him from the ITV Talent Competition when he made a portrait of Michael Mcyntire from toast and marmite. We are overjoyed to have Nathan join the Bake Off and he's putting his sweet tooth to use and joining the judging panel too.

Musical entertainment will be organised by singer/songwriter Calum Ross. He has put together a fine line up of acts and we are extremely excited to announce that Ragsy from BBC1 Talent Show The Voice will be doing a set at The Bake Off. Currently enjoying success on the back of The Voice Ragsy will be performing tracks from his new EP. Again we are grateful that he has taken time out from his busy schedule to perform for us.
Joining Ragsy will be Ellie Makes Music and a special performance by Calum Ross & Tori Lang. Other performers will be announced closer to the date.

The judging panel will again be a mix of fabulously well know people from Television & Radio as well as professional food industry types. I'm so pleased that original judges Nikki, Sarah, Matt & Mariclare are returning as well as Owain Wynn Evans (BBC Weather Presenter) Dave Brooke's (Real Radio DJ) Chris Needs (BBC Wales) Sharron Mills & Nathan Wyburn. Also making a special guest appearance will be a very famous Celebrity Big Brother Contestant!!

Hosting the event will be Wayne Courtney. Wayne not only hosts but organises the event and overseas every aspect of the day. It's the fourth Bake Off he's hosted and is thrilled by its success. He works with a great team of volunteers who work tirelessly in the run up to the Bake Off. The team headed by Elaine Morris must organise the cakes into categories, present the cakes to the judges and tally all scores. Their dedication and hard work is amazing.

All proceeds from The Great Roath Bake Off will be split between A6 Acute Stroke Unit at UHW, A6 Trauma UHW and The Church Fund at St Andrews. The generosity from the shops and businesses in Roath help raise huge amounts every year at The Bake Off.
